COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Air Force Falcons (9-3, 6-2 MW) and San Diego State Aztecs (8-4, 6-2 MW) will clash in a highly anticipated Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, December 3rd, at Falcon Stadium. The winner will claim the conference title and an automatic berth in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
The Falcons have enjoyed a remarkable resurgence under head coach Troy Calhoun, who is in his 16th season at the helm. After a disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2021, Air Force has turned things around with an impressive 9-3 record this year. They have been led by a balanced offense that features quarterback Haaziq Daniels and running back Brad Roberts, as well as a stingy defense that ranks second in the Mountain West in points allowed.
“We’re excited to be in this position,” said Calhoun. “We’ve worked hard all season long, and we’re ready for this challenge.”
San Diego State enters the championship game with an 8-4 record and a two-game winning streak. They are led by quarterback Braxton Burmeister, who has thrown for 2,242 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. The Aztecs’ defense has also been solid, allowing only 22.1 points per game.
“We know Air Force is a great team,” said SDSU head coach Brady Hoke. “But we’re confident in our abilities, and we’re looking forward to a great game.”
With the Mountain West Championship on the line, both teams will be giving it their all. The Falcons will be aiming to win their first conference title since 2019, while the Aztecs will be looking to claim their third championship in the past six years.
“This is a huge game for both programs,” said Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. “The atmosphere is going to be electric, and we’re expecting a great championship game.”
The winner of Saturday’s game will not only win the Mountain West Championship but will also earn an automatic bid to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The loser will likely have to settle for a bowl game in the lower tier.
“We’re focused on winning the championship,” said Daniels. “We know it’s going to be a tough game, but we’re prepared for it.”
