Bears’ Matt Eberflus, Caleb Williams Headed In Opposite Directions

The Chicago Bears and Caleb Williams are headed in opposite directions after the team’s Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Eberflus’ Struggles Continue

Matt Eberflus’ tenure as Bears head coach got off to a rocky start with a 19-10 loss to the 49ers.

“We didn’t play well enough in any phase of the game,” Eberflus said. “We have a lot of work to do.”

The Bears’ offense struggled to move the ball, managing just 208 yards of total offense. Quarterback Justin Fields was held to just 121 passing yards and was sacked five times.

“We need to be better at executing our offense,” Eberflus said. “We need to give Justin more time to throw and we need to make more plays down the field.

Williams Impresses in Debut

While the Bears struggled, Caleb Williams had a standout performance in his first career start for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Williams threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown in a 45-13 win over Kent State.

“Caleb played great,” Sooners head coach Brent Venables said. “He made some big plays for us and led our offense down the field when we needed it.

Williams is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the country and is expected to be a high pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Outlook for the Season

The Bears are now 0-1 on the season and face a tough road ahead with games against the Packers, Vikings, and Giants in the next three weeks.

The Sooners, on the other hand, are 1-0 and are ranked No. 6 in the country.

It remains to be seen if the Bears can turn things around under Eberflus, but Caleb Williams is certainly a player to watch for the Sooners.
