Brian Schottenheimer’s Head Coaching Interview with the Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys and Brian Schottenheimer will reconvene on Wednesday to further discuss the team’s vacant head coaching position, as reported by Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports.

Schottenheimer, the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator since 2023, spent four hours interviewing for the head coaching job on Tuesday. He will reportedly have another opportunity to demonstrate his qualifications to the Dallas executives and prove his worthiness as the successor to Mike McCarthy.

Schottenheimer’s Background and Appeal

Schottenheimer’s familiarity with the Cowboys organization, fostered by owner Jerry Jones’ preference for known entities, may give him an edge in the race for the head coaching job.

As of this week, DraftKings has installed Schottenheimer as the betting favorite at -250 odds, indicating a $100 profit for a $250 wager. Kellen Moore, the initial favorite, has dropped to +250 odds.

Schottenheimer, 51, has extensive coaching experience, including stints as quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers from 2001-2005 and offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks before joining the Cowboys in 2022.

Should he secure the head coaching position, either with the Cowboys or elsewhere, Schottenheimer reportedly aspires to assume play-calling responsibilities.

Internal and External Candidates

Schottenheimer is the first known internal candidate to interview for the Cowboys’ head coaching job. The team has also engaged in discussions with Moore, Robert Saleh, and Leslie Frazier during the interview process.

The Cowboys’ decision on their next head coach is still pending, but Schottenheimer’s strong candidacy, backed by his prior experience and familiarity with the organization, makes him a formidable contender for the position.
